METHODS Male Wistar rats weighing 250-280 g were used. Groups of seven normal or
seven polycythemic rats were exposed to atmospheres with decreased partial pressures of
oxygen for 16 hr, and the erythropoietin activity of plasma collected at the end of the
exposure to the low oxygen pressure was determined. Polycythemia was induced in the rats
by administering intravenously 7.5 ml of packed red blood cells from normal rat donors 3 hr
